I spent years designing relational schemas with the tools a large company buys, and years watching everyone outside the licence do without. The tools were good. The arrangement was not: the person who spots an error in the model is rarely the person allowed to correct it.
Three times in two years I went looking for something the whole data office could use. Each time the answer was a trial week, a crippled community edition, or a self-hosted build with the useful parts removed. So I built the thing I had been looking for and put the source next to it.
